No se podía decir que era miedoso o tímido, sino todo lo contrario; pero, desde hacia cierto tiempo, el joven se hallaba en un estado de exitación y angustia rayano en la hipocresía. Se había replegado hasta tan punto sobre sí mismo y se había aislado tanto de los demás, que le producía aprensión la idea de cruzarse, no ya con la dueña de su casa si no con cualquier otra persona. La pobreza lo tenía abatido. Pero, últimamente, incluso su penosa situación había dejado de preocuparle.
